    • Hearty Chili Recipe

Posted at 9:32 am by Hollie Jeakins Photography, on March 31, 2015

      SimplyWholeFoods_Chilli

When I think of comfort food my mind turns to chili.  Chili is an incredibly versatile one pot dish.  Pack in a thermos for a day trip, serve it to friends at a party or snuggle up and enjoy yourself while watching a movie. If you’re into sports, chili is right up there with nachos and pizza for essential game day eating.   It feeds a large crowd for a reasonable price and provides excellent leftovers.

This chili is remarkably easy to make and can be cooked in a big batch.  I think it’s perfectly balanced with just the right amount of spices, hearty chunks of meat, spiced tomato-y sauce and filling beans.  If you’re looking for true Paleo version just forgo the beans and you’re set.

While it is sometimes considered a cold weather food,  I enjoy chili year-round and you should to!  It is one of my go-to meals for busy days because I can have a filling healthy meal that feeds my whole family (with leftovers) in about a half hour.

We are heading out with the kids today for skating lessons, followed by grocery shopping  and then my husband’s soccer game.  Can you guess what I’m throwing on to simplify dinner?

    • Chocolate, Oh How I Love Thee

Posted at 7:11 am by Hollie Jeakins Photography, on February 12, 2015

Chocolate roses, chocolate squares, chocolate bark, chocolate drizzle, and of course little chocolate hearts.

Did I mention chocolate too much?  Not nearly enough when Valentine’s Day is involved!

Valentine’s Day and chocolate will always go hand in hand.  This year I decided to make some decadent chocolate hearts!

      SimplyWholeFoods_Homemade Chocolate

Dark rich chocolate can be made with 3 ingredients.  It’s magical watching the warm honey and cacao butter blend together with the powdery cacao to create a thick & creamy liquid chocolate.

There’s no limit to creativity when you make your own chocolate delicacies.  I used heart-shaped molds that I picked up at a thrift store and small spice bowls to create little chocolate drops.  Use whatever you have! Continue reading →

    • How to Make Blender Hummus in 4 Easy Steps

Posted at 8:17 am by Hollie Jeakins Photography, on January 6, 2015

      SimplyWholeFoods_Hummus

Premade hummus is an expensive item at the grocery store.  Also, the containers they come in are too small and don’t provide nearly enough hummus to satiate my family’s hummus requirements.  When my family wants hummus, they want LOTS of hummus!

I much prefer to make my own though and you should too.  Making your own hummus is ridiculously easy and is also ten times better than those pre-made versions from the grocery store.

The hummus on store shelves will often contain preservatives, stabilizers, and oils that I’d much prefer to avoid.  Homemade hummus contains real ingredients like organic olive oil, fresh lemon juice, garlic and tahini.

The best news? You can make this hummus in 4 steps! It’s super creamy and tastes just like the hummus sold at my favourite Lebanese restaurant.  It also very cheap to make..  especially if you opt for dried chickpeas. Continue reading →

    • Skinnylicious Cookbook: Coconut & Carob Frozen Snow Balls

Posted at 8:57 pm by Hollie Jeakins Photography, on October 29, 2014

Here’s the recipe for Coconut & Carob Frozen Snow Balls from the Skinnylicious Cookbook! My instagram followers asked for it so now it’s time to deliver!

This is the type of treat that I love to keep stashed away in my freezer for those times when you just need a treat.  It also makes a great snack for when you cuddle up with the family for your upteenth rewatch of Disney’s Frozen.   I think even Olaf would approve.

A diet with nutrient-dense whole foods and healthy fats is the key to maintaining a healthy body weight and trimming down.   That is one of the key points that Flavia hammers home in the book and in her personal coaching sessions.   With that in mind, there is plenty of room for healthy indulgences – like these Snow Balls!

Feel free to substitute cacao or cocoa powder for the carob powder and any nut meal would work.

      —–

Thank you to everyone who is buying the book.  I’m seeing orders being placed from all over the world!  Indonesia, Australia, USA, Canada, Portugal and France!   PLEASE, PLEASE leave me a comment in one of my posts so I can extend you a personal thank you.

Skinnylicious Cooking is still on sale until Friday night so please grab your copy sooner rather than later.  It’s an ebook that looks fantastic on an iPad or Android tablet.
