    • Have you tried CSA? (Community Shared Agriculture)

Posted at 4:02 pm by Hollie Jeakins Photography, on June 25, 2013

I would love to feed my family all locally grown organic food.  Unfortunately the cost, variety and quality that most grocery stores offer will often prevent me from doing so.

Sometimes I will browse the isles of the grocery store and see the organic produce selling for up to 3x the amount for the same veggie or fruit that is found in the non-organic bin.  Eggs, milk and meat can be even worse.

Remove the cost factor and  I still don’t see the variety or quality available at most super markets.  I guess the turnover is just not there yet for organic produce.  The vegetables will often look wilted and somewhat dull.  I’m sure this will change as demand grows and organic becomes more mainstream.

That said, there are some great markets that sell organic produce that is fresh and vibrant.  Beside it however there comes a hefty price tag.  It is usually too cost prohibitive to consider purchasing all organic produce each week.

Welcome to Community Shared Agriculture or  CSA. Continue reading →

    • Simple One Dish Wonder-Hello Dutch Oven!

Posted at 3:17 pm by Hollie Jeakins Photography, on June 5, 2013

20130605-093839.jpgI love the versatility of the Dutch Oven.  You can cook on the stove top or in the oven. I love that I can cook anything from a large batch of soup to a whole roasted chicken dinner (including potatoes and veggies!)

One pot, one mess, one incredible meal…count me in!

Dutch ovens can be a somewhat expensive investment, but  they are well worth the price tag.  I’ve had mine for close to ten years and I use it daily.  When you factor in how many cooking hours my pot has already seen and how many more it will still provide for me…the investment seems small and the payoff large!

My dutch oven truly is my go-to pot. Hands down. Continue reading →

    • Presentation Is Key

Posted at 2:59 pm by Hollie Jeakins Photography, on June 5, 2013

20130605-103735.jpg 20130605-103838.jpgI have a little secret that turns healthy eating into fun! It’s so simple and yet can really make a clean, healthy meal turn into magic!

      Presentation!

Presentation really is key and sometimes can make or break a meal (to me anyways).

I love serving my soups in deep white, wide-brimmed bowls.  The outcome is so elegant.  I feel like my family is dining at a fancy restaurant about to dig into some classic or exotic cuisine.  The bonus, though, is that I know what all the ingredients are…healthy, allergen free and completely homemade.

If I really want to “spice it up” I add some beautiful fresh garnish to the top and it takes the meal to a new level! It may just be all in my head, and that’s ok! What matters is that meal time is fun, my family gets excited by the fantastic looking food they’re about to dig into and I’ve turned a simple meal into something great. Continue reading →

    • Simply Sides…

Posted at 4:33 pm by Hollie Jeakins Photography, on June 3, 2013

20130603-103037.jpg Maple Drizzled Sweet Potatoes, Oregano Roasted Potatoes with Lemon and Garlicky Button Mushrooms. Need I say more?

I would like to share a few of my go-to and favourite side dishes, which I call, Simply Sides. I love them because they all have few ingredients, take only a minute to prep and go with almost everything. The real bonus is the oven temp and time is the same for all three dishes. Three simple sides that pair well together for taste as well as cooking convenience. Love it!

Sweet potatoes are little nutrition powerhouses packed with the good stuff…they even say sweet potatoes can help stabilize blood sugar levels! I find that potatoes and mushrooms are great company pleasers. What’s better on a busy night than a simple side? 3 simply sides! Continue reading →

    • Is Healthy Eating Too Hard?

Posted at 2:19 pm by Hollie Jeakins Photography, on June 1, 2013

      photo (24)

There seems to be a large misconception about healthy eating.

I hosted a party last night for my sister’s birthday.  My whole family came over for dinner followed by cake and coffee.  We ended up sitting around chatting for hours into the night.   Toward the end of the night, the conversation turned to “healthy eating” and the consensus seemed to be:

      1. Too hard
      2. Too expensive
      3. Too time-consuming

I sat back and took it all in.  I chose not to say anything, at that point, as I wanted to really think about what everyone had to say and defend “healthy eating” with a thought out response.

I know from experience, convincing people, healthy eating is not only achievable but can be cost efficient and straightforward (once you figure out the basics!) is not an easy task.

I love healthy eating and find that I’m very passionate about food, natural living and attaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle.  I would love to help everyone struggling with achieving their personal healthy living goals.  The one thing….super important…if not the most important factor….you truly and deeply have to want to change and be willing to push yourself beyond your comfort boundaries.

Once committed to a new way of thinking and a new life style of healthy eating, there are a few basic steps that can go along way in achieving a new lease of life! Continue reading →
