I love that the new year comes with a clean blank slate and a world of possibilities! You don’t need to carry the weight of last year’s poor eating decisions and can start over by making healthy choices for yourself and your family.

Let’s welcome 2014 with some clean healthy eating habits!  I think we can all benefit from a little detox and clean up after the holiday’s indulgences.

I’ve put together some simple substitutions for you to start with.  Consider these substitutions as baby steps to get you started.  You don’t need to start sprinting right out of the gate.

These basic but important substitutions can help you get on your way to a healthier 2014.  A new year-a new you! Continue reading →

    • Say Goodbye to Picky Eaters

Say good-bye to picky eaters. Say hello to toddler tummies filled with wholesome goodness!

Above are pictures of my four-year old son and an 18 month old daughter.  I work hard to provide food that nurtures, heals and benefits their growing bodies. They eat healthy because it really is the only option in our house.

Even if your little one seems to hate healthy food, with patience and love you can still win your little one(s) over!  As adults, we know that healthy food is necessary to run our bodies at optimum efficiency.  Little ones on the other hand, would probably be happy with jam toast, cereal and cookies for each meal..that is a recipe for disaster and a definite no-no! • Have you tried CSA? (Community Shared Agriculture)

I would love to feed my family all locally grown organic food.  Unfortunately the cost, variety and quality that most grocery stores offer will often prevent me from doing so.

Sometimes I will browse the isles of the grocery store and see the organic produce selling for up to 3x the amount for the same veggie or fruit that is found in the non-organic bin.  Eggs, milk and meat can be even worse.

Remove the cost factor and  I still don’t see the variety or quality available at most super markets.  I guess the turnover is just not there yet for organic produce.  The vegetables will often look wilted and somewhat dull.  I’m sure this will change as demand grows and organic becomes more mainstream.

That said, there are some great markets that sell organic produce that is fresh and vibrant.  Beside it however there comes a hefty price tag.  It is usually too cost prohibitive to consider purchasing all organic produce each week.

Welcome to Community Shared Agriculture or  CSA. Continue reading →

      collageHi All,

I think everyone, would like a healthier, simpler and yummier lifestyle. I know I would!

As a wife and mother of two precious but on-the-go toddlers, my life can be quite hectic! I don’t get much sleep, I am constantly on the move, and normally running around from here to there trying to keep everything together. Sometimes, that can be easier said than done 🙂

No matter how busy my life gets, I keep my goal close to heart, and focus on the food that I provide for my family.

My desire to provide healthy, yummy food for my family along with some nagging digestive issues I have personally dealt with for many years has lead me to the rules I live by:

      1. Cook with fresh, natural whole foods
      2. Avoid items at the grocery store with ingredient lists over 5 items (give or take), or mystery ingredients (ie. items I have trouble pronouncing). Pretty much just avoid all processed foods which contain all the yuck!
      3. Avoid low fat or light items and go for the natural full fat version and consume in moderation
      4. Consume recommended amounts of healthy fat. I don’t believe in dieting as it is not sustainable
      5. Most, if not all of my meals are dairy, soy, corn and gluten free
      6. It’s okay to indulge a little. A square of dark chocolate and red wine…yum! and hello antioxidants 🙂

Over the past 10 years, I have been collecting and tweaking recipes, creating my own recipes that are fast, simple and delicious as well as learning all that I can on natural, heathy and non allergenic whole foods. I have been working through my digestive issues and healing my body with whole foods and the elimination of allergens.

I believe that a whole diet consisting of fresh ingredients and limiting “allergen” foods in general can greatly help anyone feel and live a happier lifestyle as well as maintain a healthy body weight (never dieting).

I hope through my blog, that I can help people looking for a healthier whole food diet or provide assistance to those who are suffering from digestive issues (as I did for so many years) . I look forward to sharing my posts, advice (what works for me!), recipes, and my love of food and happy life moments.
      Sincerely,

      Hollie SimplyWholeFoods
