    • Reflecting with Chocolate Dipped Coconut & Fresh Fig Bites

Posted at 7:43 am by Hollie Jeakins Photography, on July 14, 2014

Do you make time for yourself each day?

When the kiddies go down, I love taking the opportunity to sit back, steep a hot tea and spend a few minutes to reflect on the day or life in general.  Life gets very busy and sometimes carving out a break is about as easy as getting toothpaste back in the tube.  But even if you only manage 5-15 minutes before there’s another matter to attend to it’s very important to make some time for yourself.  It is just so beneficial to your well-being and also your loved ones.  A happy mommy makes a happy family they say!

Refreshing your body and mind aside, it’s also easier to appreciate everything you have when you take a step back and reflect.

    • Tropical Nut Butter Bliss Smoothie

Posted at 2:17 pm by Hollie Jeakins Photography, on January 17, 2014

      SimplyWholeFoods_Smoothie

A layered smoothie is beautiful, creative and delicious.  But is it a lot of work?

I often get the “it doesn’t look too simple” comment from my hubby when he sees me enjoying one of my layered smoothies. The truth is that they are actually very straightforward and simple.

Please don’t be afraid to give one a try!

Here’s a simple breakdown of the layered smoothie process:

      • Have all your ingredients out on your counter for easy access
      • Set out two glasses.  One will be a temporary home for the first layer you process.  The other will be your designated smoothie glass.
      • Toss all the ingredients for the first layer into your blender.  Process those goodies!
      • Pour the mixture into the glass you have designated as the “temporary home” for the first layer.
      • Quickly rinse out your blender (this should only take a couple of seconds!)
      • Toss the ingredients for layer 2 into your blender,  blend away!
      • Pour this mixture directly from your blender into your smoothie glass.  Pour the other layer (previously poured into your “temporary home” glass) into your smoothie cup
      • Alternate layers (in any order) until smoothie cup is full!
      • Revel in your smoothie’s beauty!

Practice your new smoothie layering skills with Tropical Nut Butter Bliss Smoothie. This has to be one of my favourite smoothies, hands down!  It’s really that good. Continue reading →

    • Almond Pumpkin Seed Butter with Cinnamon, Honey and Cacoa

Posted at 3:26 pm by Hollie Jeakins Photography, on September 2, 2013

Whenever I make homemade nut butter, I can’t stop myself from eating spoonfuls right out of the blender.

The spread is still warm and incredibly decadent!

It doesn’t matter what I spread it onto… this nut butter has the power to turn something rather bland into something magical.

Natural nut butter gets major points in the nutrition category.  My personal favourites are almond based butters.  Almond butter is high in antioxidants, can help reduce blood sugar levels and cholesterol and (shockingly!) can assist in weight control.  Almond butter can be viewed as a super food spread!

You will want to avoid the processed kind (*ahem* Kraft Peanut Butter) as they are often filled with artery clogging hydrogenated oils.

Hydrogenated oils are a huge no-no and I personally avoid anything containing “hydrolyzed oils”.

And another good reason to avoid processed nut butters is the process to blend your own is incredibly simple and cost-effective. Use some creativity when making your own and throw in some extra ingredients!

How does Almond Pumpkin Seed Butter with Cinnamon, Honey and Cacao sound? Continue reading →

    • Orange Banana Tropical Breeze Smoothie

Posted at 9:01 am by Hollie Jeakins Photography, on August 22, 2013

There’s nothing that says breakfast better than a large cup of fresh pressed OJ alongside bacon (nitrate free of course!) and eggs! I always like to add a side of kale.

Here is a twist on the traditional glass of orange juice…still simple with an added banana coconut flavour burst and a great protein boost!

      20130822-082041.jpg

Let this smoothie be your wake up call! Fuel your engine (or your loved one’s tummies) with this baby!

      Orange Banana Tropical Breeze Smoothie

      The Ingredients:

      • 2 oranges, peeled
      • 15 frozen banana chunks (approx 1 inch chunks)
      • 2 tbsp raw hemp protein powder (or protein powder of choice)
      • 1/4 cup calcium enriched coconut milk Continue reading →
